Was ist eigentlich Luxus? Im Laufe meiner Tätigkeit als Journalistin habe ich die verschiedensten Facetten von Luxus kennen gelernt. So ist Luxus für jeden Menschen etwas anderes, auch wenn unser westlicher Kulturkreis manchen Luxus klar definiert. Der Begriff Luxus - von lateinisch: Üppigkeit, aber auch Verschwendung - stammt vielleicht ursprünglich von dem Adjektiv luxus für ausgerenkt ab. Luxus wäre dann eine Ausrenkung vom Üblichen, Normalen und gesellschaftlich als durchschnittlich Akzeptierten. Dabei gilt jedoch die Regel, dass jede Gesellschaft diesen Durchschnitt auf andere Weise interpretiert. Wer jeden Tag zum Brunnen laufen muss, sieht fließendes Wasser als Luxusgut an. Ebenso ergeht es Kindern, die arbeiten müssen, statt spielen zu dürfen. Wo Zwang an der Tagesordnung ist, steht die Freiheit am höchsten und kann zum unerreichbaren Luxus werden. Kurzum - jeder Einzelne versteht unter Luxus ein anderes Gut, ob sichtbarer Gegenstand oder hoher geistiger Wert. Luxus dient als sinnvolle Finanzinvestition, genügt der eigenen Prunksucht oder ist Teil des individuellen Selbstverständnisses und Selbstwertgefühls. Daher geht die Vorstellung von Kostbarkeit (Luxus) nicht zwangsweise konform mit einem hohen Geldpreis oder gesellschaftlichen Vorstellungen und kann sehr privater Natur sein.
